Introduction for SubEdit

A comprehensive guide to the features of our Subtitle Editor.

Our Subtitle Editor is a powerful, browser-based tool designed to help you create, edit, and synchronize subtitles for your videos with ease and precision.

Key Features

The editor is packed with features to streamline your subtitling workflow:

1. Intuitive Interface

The editor boasts a clean and user-friendly interface, making it easy for both beginners and professionals to navigate and utilize its full potential.

2. Video Playback & Real-time Preview

  • In-Browser Video Upload: Directly upload your video files into the editor.
  • Real-time Subtitle Display: See your subtitles overlaid on the video as you edit, ensuring perfect synchronization.

3. Comprehensive Subtitle Editing

  • Text Editing: Easily add, modify, or delete subtitle text.
  • Timing Adjustment: Precisely set and adjust the start and end times for each subtitle entry.
  • Visual Timeline: A dynamic timeline provides a visual representation of your subtitles against the video's audio waveform (if available and implemented), allowing for intuitive drag-and-drop adjustments of subtitle timings and durations.
  • Frame-Accurate Control: Fine-tune timings down to the frame level for professional-grade synchronization.

4. Multiple Subtitle Track Management

  • Work with Multiple Files: Import and manage several subtitle files (e.g., different languages, or different versions) for the same video.
  • Easy Switching: Seamlessly switch between active subtitle tracks to compare or edit.

5. Timeline Navigation & Control

  • Zoom Functionality: Zoom in and out of the timeline to get a broad overview or focus on minute details.
  • Scroll & Pan: Easily navigate through the timeline, even for long videos.

6. Supported Formats

  • Import: While not explicitly detailed in the provided code, typical subtitle editors support importing common formats like SRT, VTT. (Please confirm and update this section).
  • Export: Export your completed subtitles in industry-standard formats:
    • .srt (SubRip Text)
    • .vtt (WebVTT)
    • .sbv (YouTube SBV)

Long-press the export button (for more than 1 second) to choose the desired export file format.

7. Workspace Management

  • Loading and Saving: (Inferred from EditorHeader and typical editor functionality) The ability to save your project/progress and load existing projects.
  • File Handling: (Inferred from FileUploader and MultiFileUploader components) Robust options for uploading video and subtitle files.
  • Importing from more formats: Support for formats like ASS, SSA, SBV.
  • Spell Check & Grammar Tools.

8. Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Efficient Workflow: A comprehensive set of keyboard shortcuts is available to speed up common actions.

What Our Editor Can Do

  • Create subtitles from scratch: Write and time your subtitles line by line.
  • Edit existing subtitle files: Upload your SRT or VTT files and make necessary corrections or adjustments.
  • Synchronize subtitles with video: Precisely match subtitle appearance with the audio and visuals of your video.
  • Manage multiple language versions: Work on different language tracks for the same video content.
  • Offer a visual workflow: The timeline and real-time preview provide an intuitive editing experience.

What Our Editor Currently Might Not Do

  • Automatic Speech-to-Text (Transcription): The editor does not currently seem to offer automatic transcription of video audio into subtitles. This would need to be done externally or manually.
  • Automatic Translation: There's no indication of built-in automatic translation features for subtitles.
  • Advanced Styling Options: While basic text editing is available, advanced styling options for subtitles (e.g., font color, size, position beyond VTT cues, complex tags) might be limited compared to some desktop software.
  • Collaboration Features: Real-time collaborative editing by multiple users is likely not supported.
  • Direct Platform Integration (e.g., YouTube Upload): The editor focuses on creating and exporting subtitle files. Direct uploading or integration with video platforms like YouTube is not a listed feature.
  • Support for all video/subtitle formats: While common formats are supported for export (SRT, VTT), the range of importable video and subtitle formats might be limited.

Future Considerations (Wishlist/Roadmap)

  • Audio Waveform Visualization: Displaying an audio waveform on the timeline would greatly aid in precise subtitle timing.
  • Auto-save Functionality: To prevent loss of work.
  • Subtitle Styling Previews: If more advanced VTT styling is supported, a preview would be beneficial.
  • Importing from more formats: Support for formats like ASS, SSA, SBV.
  • Spell Check & Grammar Tools.

This document provides an overview of the Subtitle Editor's capabilities. As the editor evolves, this guide will be updated to reflect new features and improvements.
